Hot and cold on its own

That is the complaint we get most, and it is almost never the boiler. A thermostatic cartridge works by mixing hot and cold to hold a set temperature. Limescale builds on the internal element until it stops moving freely, and the temperature swings.

Replacing the cartridge is a fraction of the cost of a new valve, and on most makes it is a straight swap. We will tell you if the part is no longer available rather than fit something that will not last.

Pressure problems

If the pressure has dropped gradually, work through it in order:

1. The head. Unscrew it and look. If the holes are white, that is your answer, and it is a ten-minute fix.
2. The pump. If you have one, listen to it. A pump that runs but does not push is usually a scaled impeller.
3. The cartridge or the filter. Most mixers have inlet filters that clog.
4. The supply. If the cold taps in the rest of the property are also weak, the problem is upstream and no shower part will fix it.

Full replacements

Tray out, tray in, re-tiling the immediate surround, waste reconnected and tested. Two to three hours depending on what is behind the old tray, which you do not know until it comes out. We will tell you the range before we start and if it turns into something bigger we stop and talk to you.
